What it does
Asgaros Forum adds a discussion board to a WordPress site, using its existing administration and user accounts. The open-source plugin can be used continuously for free on your own hosting.
Activate Asgaros Forum from WordPress's Plugins screen, then add its generated forum page to the site menu. An existing page can also display [forum]. The Forum menu contains settings and the controls for creating categories and forums.
Shortcode parameters can show a particular topic, forum or category instead of the whole board. Assign moderators or ban members through the WordPress user-edit screen. If recent posts or other changes do not appear, exclude the forum page from third-party page caching.
This is installable GPL software. You provide the WordPress site, hosting and administrator account; readers can use guest access where the forum operator enables it.
Strengths
- A shortcode can display a selected forum area on another page
- Member moderation uses the existing WordPress administration
Watch out for
- Third-party page caching can obscure forum content changes
Best for
- WordPress sites adding an administered discussion community
