What it does

wpForo is a WordPress forum plugin with multiple layouts, member groups and moderation. The core is free; optional add-ons and AI services have separate charges, and setup uses your WordPress administrator account.

Install wpForo through Plugins > Add New in the WordPress dashboard and activate it. It builds member profiles from existing WordPress users; a larger site may need the Continue Synchronization action before setup finishes.

The first board creates a page at /community/, or /community-2/ if that address is occupied. Its [wpforo] shortcode can have ordinary content above or below it. Check the page's layout before adding it to site navigation because it may not inherit the theme's usual settings.

Permissions have two layers. Usergroup settings cover dashboard and broader member actions. Forum Access settings control forums, topics and replies, with access assigned to groups in each forum. This distinction matters when a customer should read one support area without gaining wider administration rights.

The free forum core does not require an AI subscription. Optional AI operations spend credits; initial indexing credits and a 500-credit trial are limited allowances. Paid subscriptions add credits, and unused balances carry forward. Choose those services separately from the ordinary forum setup.

Strengths

  • Forum pages can combine the discussion shortcode with other page content
  • Group-wide actions and forum-specific access have separate settings

Watch out for

  • The forum page may not inherit the active theme's layout settings
  • Ongoing AI services have separate credit and subscription limits

Best for

  • WordPress community operators configuring board pages and member permissions
