What it does

Xara Designer Pro+ is Windows desktop software for vector illustration, photo editing, page layout and web design. Its illustration tools include shape drawing, blends, live effects and repeated brush objects. Access requires an active subscription, with a 14-day trial available.

Repeat artwork without losing control

Scatter brushes place repeated objects along a line, with controls for spacing, rotation, size and offset. Live Copies serve a different purpose: editing one copy updates its duplicates. These are useful for borders and recurring motifs.

SmartShapes and freehand curves create the underlying forms. ClipView masks them through another object, while feathering softens edges and live effects remain attached as a shape changes. PDF artwork can also be imported and edited.

Desktop use and activation

Designer Pro+ runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. It works offline after activation; installing, activating and fetching catalog assets require a connection. One user can activate two computers, and registration is required.

Monthly and annual subscriptions are offered. The separately sold perpetual version is a different purchase option from Pro+, whose access depends on keeping the subscription active.

Strengths

  • Scatter brushes expose placement and rotation controls
  • Live Copies keep repeated artwork synchronized
  • Live effects preserve editable vector shapes

Watch out for

  • Pro+ requires an active subscription
  • Installation and activation require internet access
  • There is no native Mac edition in the listed requirements

Best for

  • Windows designers making illustrated layouts
  • Artwork with many repeated decorative objects
