What it does
YNAB helps households assign money to spending and saving categories, record transactions and review progress. Its subscription includes shared access for up to six people. It supports manual entry, file imports and connections to selected banks, with a 34-day trial before a paid subscription.
Build a plan from money you already have
Start by personalizing the preset categories, then add irregular expenses such as an annual insurance bill. A target records how much a category needs and when. For example, a yearly renewal can have its own target instead of competing with groceries in the month it falls due.
Add your account balances by connecting a supported bank or entering them yourself. Assign the cash currently available to categories, then record or import purchases and adjust the category balances as priorities change. Expected future pay is not part of the money available to assign.
Price and household access
YNAB costs US$14.99 a month or US$109 billed annually, plus applicable tax. Signing up directly gives a 34-day trial without a credit card; it ends without a charge unless you subscribe. App-store trial terms can differ.
YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to five other people. Group members can maintain individual or shared plans, which suits households that want some spending to stay separate.
Bank imports and currencies
Direct bank import covers selected institutions in the US, Canada, UK and EU. Manual entry and file imports remain available when a bank connection is unsuitable. Each spending plan uses one currency, so a household with accounts in different currencies needs separate plans or another arrangement.

- Manual and file entry can be used alongside bank imports
Watch out for

- People planning for irregular bills alongside everyday spending
