What it does
Zod is a schema validation library for JavaScript and TypeScript. A schema describes the expected shape of an input, and parsing checks a value against those rules before returning typed data or reporting validation issues. It is useful at boundaries such as form submissions, configuration files and incoming application payloads, where a compile-time type alone cannot verify a value received at runtime.
Start by describing one input boundary as a schema, then parse data at the point where it enters the application. The official basic-usage guide uses an object with a string username and numeric experience value:
import * as z from 'zod';
const Player = z.object({ username: z.string(), xp: z.number() });
const player = Player.parse({ username: 'billie', xp: 100 });
parse returns a typed deep clone when the input is valid and throws a ZodError with issue details when it is not. Use safeParse when an invalid input is an expected branch in normal control flow. Schemas can also describe asynchronous refinements or transforms; the guide says to use parseAsync for those cases.
Zod validates values when your code calls it, so the schema must be placed at the right boundary. It does not automatically validate every request or database write in an application. The project supports JavaScript and TypeScript workflows and publishes a permissive MIT license.
Strengths
- The same schema describes runtime checks and provides inferred TypeScript types.
- The documented `safeParse` path returns a result object for expected validation failures, while `parse` exposes detailed issues through an error.
Watch out for
- Validation only occurs where application code invokes the schema; it is not an automatic request or storage policy.
- Asynchronous refinements and transforms need the asynchronous parsing methods rather than the synchronous `parse` call.
Best for
- Validating JSON or form data at application boundaries.
- Keeping runtime checks and TypeScript data shapes close together.
