What it does
Zuora connects quoted terms, subscription management, usage billing, collections and revenue operations. Its billing catalog separates products from rate plans and individual charges, allowing one offer to combine recurring, one-time and usage fees. It is aimed at organizations coordinating those rules across sales, finance and their existing business systems. A free AI monetization trial is available by request.
A quote-to-cash workflow has several handoffs: agreed terms become a billing schedule, usage becomes charges, and invoices pass into collection. Zuora connects those stages while supporting upgrades, renewals and mixed pricing models.
The catalog is the starting point. In Products > Product Catalog, use Add New Product, set its details and effective dates, then save. Open that product to add a rate plan. Each plan can contain one-time, recurring and usage charges, with its own billing period and trigger.
This structure lets the same product have a monthly offer and an annual offer without redefining what is delivered. It also means the team must keep three levels aligned: product, rate plan and charge. A simple offer can use just one of each.
Developers can preview an order to show the expected invoice amount before purchase. Zuora's example uses the customer's billing-account number and selected product rate plan, with a billing-document preview returned to the checkout. The subscription programming interface (API) also controls whether a subscription receives its own invoice or joins other subscriptions on the account invoice. Multiple-currency fields require that feature to be enabled.
Zuora Billing connects to payment gateways and can pass summarized entries into an existing accounting system. It is a billing subledger, so the general ledger remains responsible for the wider books. Quoting can connect through Zuora CPQ quoting tools in Salesforce or supported external quoting tools.
The site offers a requested free AI monetization trial configured around the business's use case, including usage, prepaid balances and hybrid pricing. This is an arranged evaluation environment. Use Talk to an expert to discuss the required products and commercial terms; the trial page does not establish a fixed duration or a complete production price.
A useful evaluation starts with an actual contract: include a recurring fee, a usage allowance and a mid-term change, then compare the catalog rules, preview and resulting invoice design with those agreed terms.
Strengths
- Product rate plans can combine recurring, one-time and usage charges.
- Order previews expose expected invoice amounts before purchase.
- Subscription-level controls determine separate or combined account invoices.
Watch out for
- The three-level catalog requires products, rate plans and charges to be configured consistently.
- Multiple-currency API fields require that feature to be enabled.
- The billing subledger still needs the organization's wider accounting system.
Best for
- Enterprises coordinating subscription sales and finance
- Businesses with recurring fees and consumption charges
- Teams integrating billing with sales and accounting systems
